Columbus Junction— Warren S. Dowson, 32, Columbus Junction, died Tuesday [April 20, 1954] at Pearl Harbor as the result of a diving accident.
Dowson, who was a chief hospitalman in the Navy, was a victim of air embolism, according to word received here. This is a condition in which air bubbles enter the blood after being subjected to high pressures in diving.
The Navy said today Dowson died during “free ascent”.training at the Pearl’ Harbor submarine base. He was an experienced diver.
Dowson’s widow and four children were at West Covina, Calif., awaiting transport to Hawaii.
Dowson had been in the Navy for 14 years and had been assigned to submarine duty for the past seven years. He was a graduate of Letts High School and had left last March 18 for duty at Pearl Harbor.
Surviving besides the widow and four children are his father, Scott Dowson, who lives between Letts and Columbus Junction; and a brother, Robert Dowson, who lives north of Columbus Junction.
