Robert J. Ellerson, 81, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, with relatives in Monmouth County, died Thursday, March 23  at Bayonne Medical Center. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a corporal. In 1956, he joined the Jersey City Fire Dept. and worked at Truck #1 Grand Street, retiring in 1981.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Florence Winters Ellerson; his brothers, Arthur, Joseph, Vincent, and Raymond Ellerson; and his sister, Florence Sponenberg. Surviving are his wife, Anna Choka Ellerson; three sons, Brian, Glenn, and Mark Ellerson; a sister, Dorothy Thompson; three daughters-in-law, Gail, Maureen, and Lorraine Ellerson; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, Kristin, Shawn, Ashley, Stephanie, Allysa, and Robert Ellerson.
Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave., Jersey City. There will be a viewing at 9:45 a.m. Monday at DePaul Chapel at the Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, 40 Sullivan Drive, Jersey City. Interment will be in Brig. Gen. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
