Norman L. Gidden of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017. He was born August 16, 1916 in Yonkers, NY, the son of Ida B. and Pincus Gidden. He graduated from City College of New York in 1937. In 1940 he was commissioned in the USMC and was a member of the First Reserve Officers Training Class. After serving in the [1st] Raider Battalion, he went on to become a Marine aviator, retiring as a major in 1946. In 1947, he joined Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO), retiring as CEO and Chairman of the Board in 1977.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Eliza Hampton. He is survived by his daughters, Jane Wiedhahn (Warren), Lucy Statler, Eliza McBride, Ann Jones (Russell), seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on June 2, 2017 at 1 p.m., at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 9350 Braddock Rd., Burke, VA. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Dr. Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850.
